45 NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD

2016 has been an exciting year for actress and fashion icon, Winona Ryder. This year saw her return to the screen along with her 45th birthday. For 45 years the queen of the 90s has provided some of the best fashion combos on and off screen. Her contrasting tom-boy street style with her classic girly yet gothic red carpet look has intrigued and inspired many for years and continues to do so. To celebrate this momentous birthday I am going to share with you some of my favourite Winona looks!

IF SHE DOESN’T SCARE YOU NO EVIL THING WILL

Cruella, Cruella De Vil

The second chapter of Lazy Oaf’s magical collaboration with Disney allows you to channel your inner Cruella De Vil, she may be evil but you can’t deny she’s got style! Bursting with faux-fur (which cruel Cruella would not approve of) and of course the signature black spots, which is what makes the Dalmatian’s look so unique! This super glamourous monochrome chapter is more versatile and wearable than the last and if it is to be as popular it is sure to fly off the virtual and literal shelves hours after release (even minutes for some pieces). If the last chapter has taught us anything it’s that you’ve got to be quick if you want to bag any of these adorable pieces! If you snooze you lose!

ALEXA CHUNG’S WINTER ARCHIVE COLLECTION IS FINALLY REVEALED

Winter is coming…

With a week to go until Alexa’s second colab with M&S hits stores, each and every piece from this highly anticipated collection was finally unveiled yesterday and can be found below! This collection is full to the brim with satin, fur and exotic animal prints – which seems to be a prevailing trend this season as wild animalistic prints can also be found in KENZO’s colab with H&M. With a hint of a 70’s retro vibe; this collection embodies the best trends this decade (and beyond) has to offer. Whilst I do not favour this collection as much as her last there are pieces that really do stand out; such as the PVC black mini-skirt, floral satin black shirt and the plush white faux-fur coat! I’m intrigued to see if this collection will be as successful as her last and what the pieces will look like in the flesh!

10 OF RICHARD NICOLL’S BEST LOOKS

The fashion industry was saddened by the unexpected passing of a true talent yesterday, 39 year old English-Australian designer, Richard Nicoll. Nicoll passed away of a suspected heart attack in the early hours of the morning in the Australian city of Sydney. Nicoll contributed enormously to the British Fashion Industry. He adopted London as his home away from home after studying and graduating with an MA from Central Saint Martins. His works were on display at numerous London Fashion Weeks and were subject to much praise and acclaim. The late designer, who was known for producing versatile and practical collections, was also favoured among the stars; with the likes of Keira Knightley and Anne Hathaway gracing the red carpet in Nicoll’s pieces. As well as establishing his own brand, Nicoll has worked with the likes of Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton. He contributed to high street brands such as Jack Wills and Topshop, and he was also set to become the creative director of Adidas in Germany. It is heartbreaking when the world loses such a talent at such a young age, but Nicoll’s legacy is sure to live on.

EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE A CAT

Cause everybody digs a swingin’ cat.

Today we FINALLY saw the arrival of the first instalment of Lazy Oaf’s long awaited collaboration with Disney, leaving us pining for more. The collection is divided into three short stories; the first being this pretty princess delight full of pastel pink and blue. Embroidered childhood favourites, including everybody’s favourite kitten Marie and princess Cinderella, induce a tidal wave of nostalgia. There isn’t a piece of this colab that I don’t want hanging in my own wardrobe and I am looking forward to the childhood treats that await in the next two stories!

MY GUIDE TO THE NORTH’S RAINIEST CITY – MANCHESTER

And so it begins…. this week saw the start of my third and FINAL year at the University of Durham and after a fun-filled Freshers week the work has already started to pile up, I already feel miles behind and the weather has taken a turn for the worst, with icy winds and torrential monsoon rain making an appearance – pathetic fallacy perhaps marking the end of all the fun and frivolities with the return of the doom and gloom that comes with attaining a degree. However, I couldn’t help but be reminded of my hometown and its surrounding area by all this rancid rain, evoking a feeling of homesickness. These rainy days remind me of all the joys the North-West has to offer. Being located slap bang in-between two of the greatest cities the North has to offer I am only a short train journey away from a host of weird and wonderful things. And all this rain has got me thinking about the rainiest city of them all, Manchester. So, I’m going to share with you a few of my favourite places in this vibrant and diverse city including shopping hotspots, eateries and more.

Shopping

Manchester is a heavan for any shopaholic! The Arndale Centre is full of high street favourites (e.g. Topshop, UO) and little treasure troves full of vintage delights are dotted about Manchester’s edgy Northern Quarter. I prefer hunting out unique pieces not likely to be found elsewhere and so I am going to share a few of the places where such items are likely to be found.

Afflecks Palace

In the heart of Manchester’s Northern Quarter, Afflecks Palace is bound to satisfy you if you are in need of the weird and wonderful, full of retro treasures not likely to be found anywhere else. This indoor market is full to the brim of stalls and wonders! It has been known to offer a strange yet satisfying shopping trip since its humble beginnings in 1981. Shoppers who have worked up an appetite can rest and refuel at the retro café situated on the top floor of the palace or they can indulge their inner child in the clever and creative cereal café. If boredom strikes (which is highly unlikely) then why not spend your time playing nostalgic arcade games, such as pac man, situated in numerous stairwells throughout the store. A trip to Affleck’s is bound to be interesting and intriguing and I can assure you it will not disappoint.

Pop Boutique

Pop Boutique, also situated in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, is the perfect place for any vintage king or queen. Bursting with vintage delights with a focus on the groovy 70’s, you’re bound to come strutting out draped in bright floral attire. Don’t get me wrong Pop Boutique also offers various items from across the decades, paying tribute to the best fashion trends modern history has to offer, including 60s Harrington jackets and 80s oversized knitwear. Make sure you have plenty to spend when you take a trip to the boutique as you’re bound to come out with bags full of retro goodies. screen-shot-2016-10-14-at-20-13-50screen-shot-2016-10-14-at-20-14-21screen-shot-2016-10-14-at-20-15-38screen-shot-2016-10-14-at-20-15-27

Cow Vintage

Cow’s colourfully painted window display lit up by twinkling vintage glass bottle lights is bound to draw you in and once in you will be welcomed by a wide array of vintage delights! With two floors of unique vintage goods, you are bound to find at least one item that will tickle your fancy. There is plenty to choose from and any trip to Cow wouldn’t be complete without an hour’s session in the changing room trying to find the best of this stores fine vintage collection. This vintage delight is another of the Northern Quarters finest and is by far one of the best in the market.img_7862screen-shot-2016-10-14-at-20-16-24img_7861

Eateries and Bars

If you’re in need of some R&R after a hefty shopping spree or you’re in need of a place to shelter after being caught in one of Manchester’s sporadic showers, do not fret because I’m going to be sharing with you some of my favourite places to dine and relax in this rainy city.

Almost Famous

If you’re in need of a succulent meat feast then head down to one of the city’s finest burger joints situated in Manchester’s Northern Quarter (and Deansgate). This mysterious burger haven may be hard to find at first but you will not forget its whereabouts once you’ve tasted one of its heavenly burgers, which always leave you hungry for more! Once you’ve located the unmarked building which hosts these dreamy delights, you are welcomed by a hefty flight of stairs, which I like to call the stairway to heaven. Do not let them put you off as once you’ve indulged in all Almost Famous has to offer you will realise that your mini-workout of the day was all worth it! Don’t forget to order some salt soaked fries to accompany your dreamy burger as these too are a treat not to be missed. A trip to Almost Famous is one which you will not forget and will leave you with your largest food baby yet hungry for more!screen-shot-2016-10-14-at-19-55-20fullsizeoutput_2e5f

Turtle Bay

If you’re absolutely sick of the cold damp weather Manchester has to offer then why not head to Turtle Bay, its vibrant décor and famous jerk chicken will transport you, momentarily, to the sunny Caribbean coast making you instantly forget about the showers that wait for you outside. The Caribbean cuisine will offer you a true escape and with lightening fast service and multitudes of fiery mouth-watering goods on offer I can assure you a trip to Turtle Bay will not disappoint!img_6533img_4937img_6529img_8725

Home Sweet Home

Home Sweet Home is sure to be your home away from home, with a cosy interior and a wide ranging display of delicious goods on offer from fried chicken in a basket to burgers, an array of milkshakes and numerous giant sickly sweet cakes to choose from. All your cravings are bound to be satisfied in this cute café/restaurant. fullsizerender-jpg-1fullsizeoutput_2e60screen-shot-2016-10-14-at-19-53-39

Junkyard Golf

If you’re not looking for a sit down meal but a bit of fun, a few bevs and maybe a hotdog or two, then get down to Junkyard Golf! This isn’t your ordinary crazy golf stunt full of not so crazy windmills and the sorts. With a Rihanna room, a bear pit and all sorts of other crazy delights, Junkyard Golf makes normal crazy golf look tame. And why not indulge in a cheeky crazy cocktail littered with various of your favourite treats from your childhood, including fizzy laces, jammy dodgers, bon-bons and more. So if you’re looking for a bit of fun but you don’t want to do the same old boring thing then head to Junkyard Golf for a fun-filled night (or afternoon) that will be like no other.IMG_4661.JPGimg_4651img_4670img_4691img_4678

Culture

If you’re in need of a culture fix, then one things for sure Manchester is not short of it! With plenty of theatres and numerous museums on offer you are bound to find something for you. Some of my favourites include the Royal Exchange where Maxine Peake likes to make a regular appearance and the Opera House and Palace Theatres where you are bound to find highly-acclaimed shows on tour– check out my previous piece on Giselle to get a taste of what the Palace has to offer. Also, just down the road in Salford Quays is the fabulous Lowry arts centre with not just two theatres but galleries, bars, restaurants and shops too! There’s also plenty of gigs on offer in this magical city, with star-studded musicians and sell out tours at the Phones 4 U arena (previously known as the MEN) to smaller more intimate gigs at the O2 Academy.  If you’re wanting to broaden your knowledge then why not head to the Museum of Science and Industry, the Imperial War Museum (strictly speaking Salford Quays too) or Manchester Art Gallery – which is currently hosting the Vogue 100 exhibition – check out my previous post on this.

One things for sure Manchester is not short of things to do! You will never be bored in this magnificent city which offers a diverse array of activities and events and you a bound to build fond memories, like I have, with any trip to the city.

KENZO X H&M LOOK BOOK FINALLY UNVEILED

After months of waiting… and anticipating… the complete Kenzo X H&M look book  has been unveiled! The collection is said to hit stores at the start of November and after intently studying the contents of the newly released look book I can confirm that this exciting collab will not disappoint. Full of vibrant colours, exotic animal prints, patterned knitwear and a multitude of textures it is clear that the collections theme of diversity was in mind with each and every stitch. Only time will tell whether this look book accurately reflects the collection in the flesh and whether the collaboration will be as successful as that with Balmain, which sold out in store and online in days. But we can only hope!

FAVOURITE COLLECTIONS FROM PFW SS17

The Grande Finale

PFW ended this lavish season with a bang! With robots and robberies, Paris provided a week like no other that was definitely out of the ordinary. There was a sense of change and progression in the air as well-established fashion houses were not afraid to demonstrate that they are more forward-thinking and well adapted to the times. We saw the first female Creative Director of the 70-year-old French fashion house Dior unveil her first collection full of feisty feminist slogans offering a sense of girl power. And we saw the fusion of fashion, femininity and technology in Chanel’s SS17 show which saw the Grand Palais transformed into Karl’s Data Centre. This week was full of fashion firsts changing the face of the industry that can often appear to be rigid and unaccommodating of the views of the modern millennium. Whilst there are rules and regularities that are here to stay (for now) this week has demonstrated how designers are not afraid to steer away from the status quo every now and again. And when they do they are sure to make a lasting impression.

Dior SS17 Ready-To-Wear – Friday 30th September 2016

This exquisite collection put together (in only six weeks!!) by the established fashion house’s first female Creative Director , Maria Grazia Chiuri, was a tribute to women everywhere. With simple slogan t-shirts that read “we should all be feminists” and princess evening gowns that oozed femininity there was no shortage of girl power. The juxtaposition of the fierce fencing jackets and the dainty flowing dresses conveyed the many guises of a feminist embodying the idea that anyone can be such. Homage was also paid to the founder himself with tarot-inspired and astrological embroidery, both said to have been an interest of the designer. This beautiful collection is sure to inspire the modern woman representing female progression and power in a female dominated industry in which only a third occupy the top jobs.

Miu Miu SS17 Ready-To-Wear -Wednesday 5th October 2016

Groove is in the heart! This retro inspired beach babe show, which was the final show of the season, was bound to make show-goers feel as though they had been transported back to the 70’s and yearn for the return of summer already. We saw glossy swimwear grace its way down the runway accompanied by flamboyant floral rubber swimming caps. Popping with vibrant colours and full to the brim of groovy floral prints and patterns this was sure to make any 70’s hippy feel nostalgic.

Chanel SS17 Ready-To-Wear – Tuesday 4th October 2016

Karl Lagerfled likes to ensure his shows make a lasting impression jumping from one extreme to the next with his themes. And this season did not fail to disappoint. Karl provided an insight into the future conveying the relationship between fashion, femininity and technology in his SS17 collection unveiled in the Grand Palais which was transformed into his very own Chanel Data Centre. This collection blew the fuse with cable woven tweed, neon laser beam prints and edgy urban snapbacks making an appearance on the runway. Robotic models opened the futuristic show strutting their stuff in Coco’s renowned tweed ensemble, this ensured that this classic piece was viewed in a whole new light making it timeless and immortal. Karl clearly had the next generation of Chanel shoppers in mind and it is clear that the German designer recognises the need for the industry to adapt to the demands of modern society.

Kenzo SS17 Ready-To-Wear – Tuesday 4th October 2016

Miu Miu wasn’t the only collection that offered a blast from the past. Whilst the 80’s was full of fashion faux pas this season has seen the return of many of its finest trends. Kenzo’s SS17 collection was full of puffed sleeves, boiler suit jumpsuits and a metallic pallet. There was also a hint of the 90’s with military wear, oversized tees turned into dresses and the parka coat all making a return to the runway. This retro collection is bound to appeal to any 80’s/90’s kid looking to channel their days as a teen.

Alexander McQueen SS17 Ready-To-Wear – Monday 3rd October 2016

Sarah Burton never fails to embody the late Alexander McQueen in her collections, ensuring homage is paid to the talented designer and founder in each and every stich. This gothic/punk inspired collection with grungy mini-kilts, delicately embroidered evening gowns and leather jackets skilfully painted with floral motifs merged Parisian and British fashion to create a beautiful hybrid. Tribute was paid to the founder’s origins with the lavish grounds of the Jardin du Luxembourg littered with symbols and references to the Scottish Highland with woven and taatit rugs lining the bumpy runway. Each and every piece seemed to contain a hint of McQueen’s heritage with Shetland lace, Fair Isle knits and chunky steel toe capped boots making their way onto the runway. This collection full of attitude, elegance and high-end craftsmanship stood out among the seemingly conventional Parisian fashion houses.

am2am3am4am7

I haven’t singled out a collection from this week that I would like to see grace the red carpet this coming award season as no single collection stood out as such. Rather, I felt there were exquisite pieces from multiple collections which would be suitable attire to any red carpet event including ones that I have discussed above such as Dior and McQueen and ones not mentioned including Valentino. Below are some of the pieces I would like to see strut down the carpet:

vvd7am6

Paris provided a seemingly splendid end to what has been an exciting and eventful fashion-filled month. So the fashion frivolities may have come to an end until next season (Jan/Feb 2017) but in this constantly evolving and fast-paced industry we will not be short of new developments keeping us on our toes in the meantime.

DOES SOCIAL MEDIA SURRENDER OUR SOCIAL SECURITY?

Following the horrendous attack on American Reality TV star, Kim Kardashian, in which she was held at gunpoint and robbed of £8.5 million worth of jewellery I couldn’t help but question how such a famous and highly protected –albeit clearly not that well protected – individual’s security could be violated in such a way. I was inclined to think that maybe social media was partly responsible for this breach of security…

Kim Kardashian is known as being a social media queen with over 100 million followers on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. Her every movement is documented and put on display for the whole world to see. The very night she had been held at gunpoint and prior to the violation she had posted five tweets, three pictures on Instagram and numerous Snapchat stories, all revealing her current affairs and locations. I can’t help but think this aided her attackers, enabling them to map out her every move leading to the later infiltration of her security. Whilst none of her post revealed the location of the Parisian mansion she was staying at they provided pin-points for her attackers who could just have trailed her transport from the lavish Givenchy show to her next destination eventually arriving at the scene of the crime.

We live in a digitalised age where it has become the norm to share your every move on various online platforms and whilst this should be a wake-up call for A-Listers like Kim to better there on and offline security, let it be a warning to us all. Next time you think about revealing your current location online just have in mind the risks associated with doing so.
